The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has disclosed that on February 6, 2024, the U.S.-flagged containership President Eisenhower lost 23 containers overboard and sustained damage to 10 others while drifting approximately 94 miles south of Oakland, California. The incident, resulting in over $735,000 in damages, was attributed to incorrect cargo weight data entered during the booking process. This error led to unstable stacking configurations, which, when combined with adverse weather conditions, caused the failure of cargo-securing equipment. Fortunately, no hazardous materials were involved, and no injuries were reported. The NTSB’s findings underscore the critical importance of accurate cargo weight documentation to ensure maritime safety.
